Under this framework, the introduction is divided into four parts comprising ten chapters:

Part I introduces the overview, including the theoretical evolution of the discipline, related fields and research advancements, as well as the impacts of historical technological revolutions on cities. It aims to help readers comprehend the intrinsic drivers of urban transformation through historical perspectives and contextualize the emergence of this nascent science within its theoretical foundations.

Part II focuses on the "New Science of Cities," emphasizing novel data, technologies, and methodologies for urban research under the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It showcases cutting-edge studies in this domain, enabling readers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds interested in urban studies to grasp frontier technological trends.

Part III explores the "Science of New Cities," presenting urban transformations over the past decade through dual lenses of socio-economic dynamics and physical spatial evolution. It highlights emerging social phenomena and new principles governing urban spatial organization.

Part IV envisions "Future Cities," demonstrating projected prototypes of urban spaces and implementation-oriented creative pathways for realizing future urban visions through systematic simulations.

Course Introduction

With the rapid advancement of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, urban science has undergone transformative evolution. In this context, New City Science has emerged as both "New Science of Cities" (studying cities through novel data, methodologies, and technologies) and "Science of New Cities" (examining cities reshaped by disruptive technologies). This course further explores their integrated applications in future urban practices. Structured into four modules — Overview, New Science of Cities, Science of New Cities, and Future Cities — the curriculum systematically introduces cutting-edge research and practical advancements in New Urban Science through diverse pedagogical formats.
